Understanding income tax.
Do I need to lodge a tax return?
If your taxable income for year was more than $18,200, you had tax withheld or you paid tax under the PAYG system, you’ll be required to lodge an annual tax return with the ATO.
Can I end up owing money?
If you’ve been earning income through a business (e.g. ride sharing) and you haven’t been making Pay As You Go (PAYG) instalments, chances are that you will owe money to the ATO.
How often do I lodge a tax return?
You’ll need to lodge your income tax return every year by the 31 October deadline. If you miss this deadline you can incur fees so keep this date handy.
How do deductions work?
By claiming business expenses such as clothing and travel, you can reduce your taxable income and therefore pay less tax.
How much will I get back?
This will depend on your earnings, the business expenses you incurred and living circumstances such as dependents and health care plans.
What happens after lodging with Airtax?
Once lodged, you’ll receive a confirmation letter from the ATO with your final taxable position. Refunds will appear in your account within 4 weeks, where as owed amounts can be paid by following the instructions.
